OUR JOURNEY
SPDI™ was created for physicians, by physicians, to help you thrive in today’s value-based care environment by providing education on the business of medicine and best practices for outpatient surgery.
SPDI™ Launch
In 2017, Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA) surveyed their affiliated physicians to see what they wanted from a healthcare partner. What we learned: there was an unmet need to learn about the business side of medicine. Since the introduction of SPDI™ in February 2018, we’ve been growing the program to support our core mission.
After 18 programs in 2018, we identified consistent key topics and the ideal learning formats. In 2019, we launched our video library and created day-long summits for a deep-dive into these topics.
Expanded focus to In-Practice Physicians
While the program started with a focus on residents, fellows and early career physicians, the feedback from how much our faculty learned from participating led us to add advanced value-based care topics.
A key function of value-based care is optimizing site-of-service. As more high acuity procedures continued to migrate into the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting, another need presented itself. A concierge-like Peer 2 Peer experience was created to support our affiliated physicians.
In 2020, as a response to COVID-19 we created virtual events to enable physicians around the country to continue benefiting from this education.
Launched SPDI™ Website
The SPDI™ website was created for easy access to register for webinars, view our upcoming symposiums at conferences, access our video library and learn about our Peer-2-Peer program.

TESTIMONIALS
From our SPDITM Executive Sponsors:
Michael Ast, MD
Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hospital For Special Surgery Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College
"The business of medicine has changed dramatically from that of 20 years ago, when physicians could hang a shingle on a door and start a practice. The SCA Physician Development Institute™ (SPDI™) provides an outstanding opportunity to supplement a physician’s clinical education with the business understanding necessary to thrive in today’s economic environment."
Neil Badlani MD, MBA
Director: Spine Surgery at The Orthopaedic Sports Clinic in Houston, TX Chair: IEP Young Spine Surgeons Conference
"Physicians should be the primary leaders in the field of healthcare. It is better for our patients when we are in control. The SPDI™ program is unique in providing educational tools to physicians to maintain autonomy, maximize our financial value and formulate a strategy to best control our own careers and the future of healthcare."
Sean McMillan, DO, FAOAO, FAAOS, FAANA
Chief of Orthopedics: Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital & Virtua Willingboro Hospital Virtua orthopedics at Virtua Medical Group
"The ability to educate our residents to not only perform great surgery but also set themselves up for strategic, smart, and effective wealth management investment is extremely important to me. As faculty at two orthopedic residencies one of the most common mistakes I see is the lack of education during their training program on ways to invest and to maneuver within the ASC space. The SCA Physician Development Institute™ Programs will lead to more satisfied in savvy physicians upon the completion of their training."
Robert Mayle, MD
California Pacific Orthopaedics
"Nine years following fellowship, and I continue to find myself looking to improve my practice. I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of SPDI™. I am constantly learning from the faculty around me, and feel fortunate to be able to participate in the SPDI community. I wish I had a resource like this in Residency/Fellowship."
Winborne Macphail
Chief Operating Officer, Surgical Care Affiliates
"In today’s healthcare environment we want to support our clinical providers to help achieve the Quadruple Aim. As a company that partners with Physicians, Health Plans, and Payers, one way we can accomplish this is to provide education specific to the medical and business aspects of a specialist practice. This provides outpatient specific best practices and ensures our partners thrive from a business standpoint."
Dan Murrey, MD, MPP
President, OptumCare Specialty Practices Chief Medical Officer, Surgical Care Affiliates
"With generational changes in payment models, care redesign, and business consolidation in healthcare, the prospect of entering practice as a physician can be daunting. It’s hard enough to learn to be a great clinician and surgeon. Now you need to understand systems and strategy as well. SPDI™ gives trainees, early career surgeons, and anyone working in a dynamic healthcare environment the tools to understand how to thrive."
